When is it ok hit your pets?

Sometimes if my dog or cat don't behave I feel like they only get the point not to do something is if I smack them or something. Like my dog the other day spilled some of its water from the bowl all over the floor. How else is it gonna learn? Also my cat just doesn't understand not to go upstairs, honestly what is hard about that?.. I feel like they only respond to me when I beat the daylights out of them.

I want to know how often you wait before you finally just give up and hit your pets? When is it ok hit your pets?
It's NEVER ok! When you want very small children to learn something you don't smack the daylights out of them do you? So what makes you thinks its necessary to do to animals? Basic human decency. Christ...
I honestly believe that it is NEVER okay to hit an animal for a few reasons.

Firstly, I understand that it can get seriously frustrating if your pet is being naughty, not doing what you say or ignoring you. However, you need to realise that animals are in NO WAY like humans - when you tell your cat to go upstairs, it has no idea what you've said. It doesn't speak your language, just like you don't speak it's language. Also, it can see no reason or benefit to going upstairs. What could be up there that the cat could want that would make it necessary for it to move from where it is? Your pets need reason and motivation just like humans do.

The reason animals, like humans, respond to physical force is not that they understand that what they've done is WRONG, it's that they are scared and hurt. The will stop doing what they are doing, or run away, because they fear you, not because they comprehend what you want them to do.

Rather than teaching your animals to fear you, you need to train them to do what you say by giving them motivation.

Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be taught just like dogs can. I have two cats who come when they are called (regardless of whether it's food time!), and have taught a few previous cats to fetch. It is the same basic principle. Show them what you want them to do (ie. call the cat, say "UPSTAIRS" firmly and loudly and point upstairs, and walk the cat through going upstairs) and give them a treat. Do this a few times. Encourage them to do it by themselves by calling them (ie. calling the cat from the top of the stairs) and give them a treat. Yes, it might take a while, but it's better than the cat or do not doing what you say and fearing you.

In my opinion, people have pets to enjoy, love and entertain themselves. If you're getting frustrated, angry or feel like you need to hit your pet regularly, maybe you should reconsider your choice to have a pet. They should never make you feel stressed on a regular basis. When is it ok hit your pets?
Animal abuse is intolerable no matter the situation! Teach your dog and cat with words and gestures!
I do think there are some situations where a smack with a newspaper is warranted. Now when a dog spills its water? This must be a joke question. You think a dog has the same mental capacity as a human and will think, "oh I should not spill my water"? Absolutely ridiculous, beating a dog for this will only result in the dog being afraid of its water bowl, you or both. Beating a cat is a waste of time, it will only make the cat reclusive and untrusting of humans, Sounds like you don't need to have any pets. You are a bully / fool. You beat your kids and say they learn, that may be so because they understand english and know what your actually saying and can follow directions. To compare your pets thinking abilities with your kids is one of your problems. One of many I can see. When is it ok hit your pets?
The best way is to isolate them. I put my pets under a bin for a while and show them what the did wrong as soon as they do it and not a second later. I got my puppy to pee on the paper after one day in the house and **** on it after 2.

Also the trolling force is rather strong here. I like it.
Never, hitting dose not teach a thing....
Never, plain and simple. The fact that you also hit your children is disturbing.
well train him properly you animal abuser
It's never ok to hit a pet or any animal in my opinion.

A stern "no" will do. If you train your animals they will be more responsive to your voice. Hitting them just makes them fear you.

EDIT: So you hit your children. So your a adult. I would think a adult would know what is right and what's wrong, but apparently you don't.
That's messed up its never ok to hit ur pets and if ur going to do that to ur pets u deserve them to be taken away by animal control animals don't know any better ur an animal abuser u shouldn't have animals I would never ever hit my pets never in my life even if they are bad idc or do something wrong I will never do something horrible like that I'm not an animal abuser I love my pets some people who hit n abuse animals don't need animals and need punished
Usually, I won't pit my pet, and if it did something bad, I will be appropriate for punishment.
I seriously hope you're just a troll.

If you really are this horrible in real life, that's sad.

You should never hit an animal.

Use positive reinforcement instead.

Hopefully your kids don't resent you after they grow up for the beatings.
It is okay when the pet is larger than you and could injure/kill you easily.

Otherwise, there are other ways to go about it.
nobody likes being hit, pal...

i know it can be frustrating, but i think there should be ways to punish them if they misbehave...

like... ignoring, or confine them in their cage (kinda like time out), etc etc...

another great way is to give positive reinforcements, when they do good, praise and give them treat.

patience is important! what i do when i got frustrated is that i leave, calm myself down, and come back after my confidence is replenished.

best of luck
